File data management offers a sufficient solution for storing everyday photos on a desktop; however, it is notorious for being insecure and easily corrupted, making it an untrustworthy system when it comes to valuable intellectual property. Product Data Management (PDM) systems add a thin layer of security to file-based data storage and marginally increase speed. However, PDM systems eliminate the option for efficient CAD collaboration; with a library-card-like procedure, only one engineer can check a design in and out of a digital lockbox at a time, further complicating version control. “Fileless” data management simply improves the interface of the PDM system without changing much in the backend.
